Taxes in Austria 2025

By Aktuelles Thema, IT-Recruiting

Back in 2024, we provided an overview of Austria’s tax system. Now, in 2025, let’s revisit the tax landscape and highlight the recent changes:

Who Becomes a Taxpayer?

The criteria remain unchanged: anyone residing in Austria for more than 183 days a year or holding a permanent residence permit is considered a taxpayer.

Social Insurance Contributions:

In 2025, the social insurance contribution rates have seen slight adjustments:

2024 ➡️ 2025

Employer: 20.98% ➡️ 22.51%
Employee: 18.07% ➡️ 18.07%

Breakdown:

  • Sickness Insurance: Employer 3.78%, Employee 3.87%
  • Unemployment Insurance: Employer 2.95%, Employee 2.95%
  • Pension Insurance: Employer 12.55%, Employee 10.25%
  • Accident Insurance: Employer 1.10%, Employee 0%
  • Other: Employer 2.13%, Employee 1.00%

Income Tax Rates:

The income tax brackets for 2025 have been adjusted as follows:

  • Up to €13,308 ➡️ 0%
  • Up to €21,617 ➡️ 20%
  • Up to €35,836 ➡️ 30%
  • Up to €69,166 ➡️ 40%
  • Up to €103,072 ➡️ 48%
  • Up to €1,000,000 ➡️ 50%
  • Over €1,000,000 ➡️ 55%

These adjustments reflect efforts to account for inflation and changes in the cost of living, aiming to provide tax relief for middle-income earners and ensure a more equitable distribution of tax burdens.

Tax Return in Austria: A Comparative Look at 2024 vs. 2025

By Aktuelles Thema, IT-Recruiting

With each new year, tax regulations change, impacting how much you can deduct and what benefits you can claim. Let’s compare the tax return process in 2024 and 2025 to see what’s new and how these changes might affect you:

Income-Related Expenses:

In 2024, employees could deduct various work-related expenses such as internet, telephone, work clothes, tools, and workplace costs. If these were not itemized, a lump sum of €132.00 was automatically credited. In 2025, this lump sum remains unchanged, despite continued increases in inflation and living costs.

Commuter Flat-Rate:

The commuter flat-rate has seen adjustments in recent years. For instance, in 2024, individuals who met the requirements but did not pay income tax (income less than €12,816) could receive a commuter supplement of up to €1,331.00.

In 2025, there is a commuter supplement of up to €1,398.00, ensuring that individuals commuting long distances continue to receive financial support. Check detailed information based on your case here: Read here.

Home-Office (Teleworking):

For 2024, employees working from home could receive €3 per day as a home office allowance, applicable for up to 100 days per year (maximum €300 back). Additionally, ergonomic office furniture costs were deductible up to €300 per year, provided at least 26 home office days were logged.

As of 01.01.2025, the home office lump sum will be changed to teleworking lump sum and the home office days will be renamed to teleworking days. The other requirements and the amount of the telework lump sum remain the same. There will only be an expansion of the locations where teleworking can be carried out.

Family Bonus:

In 2024, the Family Bonus amounted to €2,000 per child per year for children under 18 and €650 for children over 18 if family allowance was still received. An important update was the minimum child allowance increase from €550 (2022) to €700 (2024).

In 2025, the Family Bonus for both children under and over 18 remains unchanged.

While some aspects of the tax return process remain unchanged, minor adjustments in allowances and deductions reflect economic trends and government policies. Whether you’re an employee, commuter, or parent, it’s important to stay updated on how these changes impact your tax return.

The Meaning of Hybrid Skills: Are „Hybrid“ Roles the Future of IT?

By Aktuelles Thema, IT-Recruiting

The term “hybrid skills” is gaining traction—and for good reason. Hybrid roles, which blend IT expertise with other specialized knowledge, are no longer a rarity but a growing trend.

What does this mean for the IT industry?

IT professionals are increasingly expected to combine technical proficiency with complementary skills like project management, data analysis, or even marketing.

These roles bridge the gap between pure tech and strategic business needs, making tech teams more versatile and aligned with organizational goals.

Examples of Hybrid Roles:

Data Scientist with Business Intelligence Expertise: Turning complex data into actionable business strategies.

Cybersecurity Analyst with Legal Insights: Ensuring compliance with evolving regulations while protecting digital assets.

Full-Stack Developer with UX/UI Design Skills: Building seamless, user-friendly applications.

Why It Matters:

For IT professionals, developing hybrid skills can open doors to diverse career paths and leadership roles. It’s not just about mastering technology anymore—it’s about leveraging it in ways that drive broader value.

Future Prospects:

By 2030, hybrid roles may surpass traditional IT positions in demand. Skills that combine IT expertise with areas like data-driven decision-making, ethical AI implementation, or digital transformation leadership will likely dominate.

Your Take?

Do you think hybrid roles are the future of IT? What skills do you believe are essential for thriving in these positions?

Generalist vs. Specialist

By Aktuelles Thema, IT-Recruiting

One of the most debated questions is:
Is it better to specialize deeply in one field or develop hybrid skills as a generalist?

So, what will suit you better? Let’s take a look!

Specialists

  • Excel in one area and bring in-depth expertise.
  • Often seen as indispensable for roles requiring niche knowledge.
  • Examples: A cybersecurity analyst or an AI researcher.

Generalists

  • Adaptable and versatile, able to connect dots across disciplines.
  • Thrive in roles requiring broad thinking and collaboration.
  • Examples: Project managers or startup founders.

Each path has its pros and cons:

  • Specialists can become highly sought-after experts, but they may face challenges if their niche becomes obsolete.
  • Generalists can work across industries, but sometimes they lack the deep technical edge.

So, what’s your take?

Are you a specialist carving a deep niche or a generalist wearing many hats?

Hybrid Skills: The Most Important Combo in IT

By Aktuelles Thema, IT-Recruiting

It’s no longer enough to just be great at coding, data analysis, or cybersecurity. The professionals shaping the future are those with hybrid skills — powerful combinations of technical expertise and complementary abilities.

But here’s the real question: What’s the ultimate hybrid skill in IT today?

Tech + Communication
Being brilliant at IT isn’t enough if no one understands your ideas. The ability to break down complex concepts into clear, actionable insights is priceless. It’s the bridge that connects teams and drives results.

Data + Storytelling
Turning raw numbers into compelling stories? That’s a skill every business is looking for. Data scientists who can present insights that influence decisions are in a league of their own.

Engineering + Creativity
Technical skills get the job done, but creative thinking finds new ways to do it better. Whether it’s designing user-friendly software or solving complex challenges, this combo is pure innovation.

Cybersecurity + Empathy
The best security solutions come from professionals who understand both systems and the people using them. Empathy helps you anticipate user behavior, mitigate risks, and create truly secure environments.

Why Does It Matter?

Companies are increasingly looking for IT professionals who can step beyond their technical roles to think strategically, communicate effectively, and contribute to big-picture goals. In short: The right combo skill isn’t just a bonus — it’s a career accelerator.

If you need some extra help, we’re here to guide you every step of the way!
